Matt Gangi is prolific. After self-releasing his first album, A, in a toxic, rent stabilized bedroom in Brooklyn under his own label, Office of Analogue and Digital (OOAAD), the DIY musician packed up his bags and set up shop across the country in Glendale, California.

After relocating, he began touring and recording hundreds of songs with old friend, drummer and multi-instrumentalist Eric Chramosta. Together, they are Gangi, and today we are happy to premiere the music video for their first single, “Railways Nos. 1-27,” off their sophomore album, Gesture Is, which drops today on OOAAD (buy it here!).

Directed by Joel Levin, the clip is pretty straight forward, documenting the seemingly mundane journey of a train ride. But like the track itself, the visual accompaniment is made beautiful with layers and textures, creating a romanticized perception of riding the railways.

Intrigued with building and modding analogue equipment, Gangi’s tracks revolve around an atmospheric, transfixing electronic component with psych-pop melodies and shoegaze-influenced instrumentation stemming from this core. The result is remarkably lush soundscapes that transcend any one genre.

Watch the music video for “Railways Nos. 1-27,” below and if you live in the Los Angeles area, check out Gangi’s record release show tonight (October 2) at The Satellite. More tour dates can be found here.

GANGI’s multimedia manifesto

LA’s GANGI released their album “gesture is” from their Office of Analogue and Digital imprint. GANGI create music that spans genres and roots around in the analog psych machinations of bands like Animal Collective and Neon Indian, though with a slighter more indie rock structure.  Their sophomore LP gesture is comes out October 3rd via The Office of Analogue and Digital.  They’ve already released one track from the album, the echo-drenched rocker “Outside Ones“, and in preparation for the album’s physical release, they’ve gone ahead and given us a second taste of the record.   Second single “Gold” wears its distortion and thumping martial beats like a badge of honor, with lead singer Matt Gangi’s voice weaving in and around the reverbed backing vocals and thunderous guitars.  Was ist GANGI?  I’d say it’s about time you found out.  Check out “Gold” below, as well as the band’s upcoming tour dates.

GANGI: GESTURE IS

This album rules. How’s that for descriptive? This Los Angeles duo, comprised of Matt Gangi and Eric Chramosta, has managed to slam together a thoughtful and eclectic 53 minutes of sound in gesture is. Still not descriptive enough? Here are more adjectives:

It’s psychedelic, it’s poppy, it’s grungy, it’s retro, it’s fresh, it’s noisy, it’s quiet, and yes, it’s rather good.

If that sounds like gushing, that’s because it is. But lest objectivity be called into question, just listen to the opening track, “Railways nos. 1-27,” and you tell me if I’m out of line. If the last minute alone doesn’t encourage you to greedily devour the rest of the album, you’ve got debris in your ears. Scoop it out and try again, would be my advice.

The gorgeous vocal arrangements in “Gold” surely will get you. Or “Perfect Citizen,” which sounds like a grooved-up Rush song with a better hook and inoffensive vocals.

The album’s opening line is, “Hey, you’ve got to pay attention.” Excellent advice. There’s a ton to listen to here.

 More New Music from Gangi

Not too long ago I brought you a track from Gangi, but it was a slow, sprawling sort, unfolding gloriously over a short span.  This new tune, “Gold,” is a little bit different, with what feels like a similar approach that one would find on Arcade Fire recordings, using backing vocals in gang form and piling on layers of instrumentation.  Again, you can find this tune on the group’s upcoming record, Gesture Is, which will be coming out on October 2nd via Office of Analogue and Digital.  If the group can maintain this sort of balance on the LP, it’s going to really win people over.

MTV — O AWARDS — FUND GANGI’S ALBUM, SCORE CUSTOM GEAR

Originally posted at MTV O Awards on September 5, 2012:

New O Music Blog feature alert: There are tons of really innovative music crowdfunding campaigns out there — from massive efforts like Amanda Palmer’s million-dollar album to Spanish Prisoner’s humble “Vantasy” — and we think it’s about time we start regularly highlighting them. This week, we spoke with LA band GANGI, who in their quest to fund their next album created some pretty rad custom hardware — which can be yours if you choose to dig around in your pocket lint and fund their record.

In addition to being the founders of their very own record label — the Office of Analogue and Digital (OOAAD) — Matt Gangi and Eric Chramosta are also a couple of gearheads, building and modding custom equipment that they used when creating their first album as a duo, gesture is.

“We really got into electronics out of necessity,” Gangi says. “Just from fixing up our own equipment.” The musician started learning about fixing and modding gear via the Web, as well as Radio Shack’s electronics learning lab and visits to manufacturers like Jensen Transformers.

“They taught me a lot of the basics like soddering,” he says. “It’s crazy because in our generation they were talking about how not a lot of us know how to sodder or know basic electrical engineering and stuff, so they were happy to share that information.”

Using that knowledge, the guys created all kinds of custom gear that they used to record their album — preamps, compressors, etc — and which they’re now offering up as rewards for generous Kickstarter users who choose to fund gesture is.

Pledge $500 or more and Gangi will build you a Classic API preamp channel for your 500 series rack, $600 will get you a custom-built synth, and those who tack a couple of hundred more on there will get even more tricked-out gear. The band also offers mastering and mixing for those who pledge dollars on the lower end of the spectrum.

The rewards for this particular campaign stand out in that they appeal to DIYers and musicians — IE, Gangi’s peers. There’s a kind of back-and-forth here that’s not as evident in other crowdfunding efforts that cater to fans — campaigns that offer up signed posters and meet-and-greet deals. Yes, Gangi is obviously selling their music first and foremost, but they’re also serving a community of like-minded musicians (assuming anyone actually has the cash to purchase a custom synth).
